VS Code 1.144 adds experimental Copilot computer use for desktop apps, sharing setup with the Copilot app and CLI
With the Universe releases, Copilot in VS Code can now read and operate desktop applications on macOS and Windows: clicking controls, typing and moving between apps that have no API or MCP server. It is behind an experimental setting and approved per app. The same capability is in public preview in the GitHub Copilot app, and organizations can switch it off by policy.
Why it matters
Brings GUI automation into the main coding editor with per-app approval and admin kill switches, useful for testing or legacy apps without APIs.
