UK funds a £100m AI Biosecurity Lab and £120m more for its AI Security Institute
Ahead of this week's Budget, the UK set out an AI security package of over £600m. It includes £100m for a new lab that uses AI to detect biological threats, £65m for pathogen countermeasures and an extra £120m for the AI Security Institute. OpenAI and Anthropic will add up to £200m in model credits and access, not cash, and Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research will also help.
Why it matters
A government is putting real money into AI-era biosecurity and model evaluation, with frontier labs supplying model access to the state.
